Fine Art Print of the Original Painting Spanish Peaks Mountains “Cosmic Huajatolla”
The Spanish Peaks are a pair of prominent, geologically unique mountains located in southeastern Huerfano and Las Animas counties in southern Colorado. Rising abruptly nearly 7,000 feet straight out of the arid High Plains, they serve as iconic landmarks that are higher than any point in the United States located further east. West Spanish Peak is the higher of the two summits, reaching an elevation of 13,631 feet. East Spanish Peak stands at an elevation of 12,688 feet. Long before European settlers arrived, the Comanche and Ute tribes held these mountains as sacred. The Comanche called them Huajatolla. Unlike the neighboring Sangre de Cristo Range which formed by tectonic uplifting, the Spanish Peaks were created by ancient underground volcanic activity about 24 to 25 million years ago. Magma forced its way upward into cracks in the Earth's sedimentary crust, cooling slowly beneath the surface to form hardened igneous rock "stocks". Over millennia, the softer surrounding sedimentary layers eroded away, completely exposing the mountain peaks.
Colorado features some of the darkest skies and highest altitude stargazing locations in the United States, making it a premier destination to view and photograph the Milky Way. Because of its dry air and vast pockets of undeveloped mountain territory, the state is home to numerous officially designated International Dark Sky places. The galactic core is visible from March to October, with the absolute peak viewing season occurring during late summer and early autumn when the galaxy's center rises highest in the sky.
