Glacial cirques are steep, bowl-shaped amphitheaters carved into mountainsides by ancient glaciers. In Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), these dramatic features represent the birthplace of the glaciers that once sculpted the park's U-shaped valleys. The park is 415 square miles (265,807 acres) that encompasses a spectacular range of mountain environments. From meadows found in the montane life zone to glistening alpine lakes and up to the towering mountain peaks, there is something for everyone to discover!

Colorado features some of the darkest skies and highest altitude stargazing locations in the United States, making it a premier destination to view and photograph the Milky Way. Because of its dry air and vast pockets of undeveloped mountain territory, the state is home to numerous officially designated International Dark Sky places. The galactic core is visible from March to October, with the absolute peak viewing season occurring during late summer and early autumn when the galaxy's center rises highest in the sky.
