The Never Summer Mountains are a rugged, high-elevation mountain range located along the northwestern border of Rocky Mountain National Park in north-central Colorado. Spanning roughly 10 miles from north to south, this small but dramatic range forms a loop along the Continental Divide, separating the headwaters of the Colorado River from the North Platte River basin. The range is heavily protected on its western slopes by the 21,090-acre Never Summer Wilderness Area.

Colorado features some of the darkest skies and highest altitude stargazing locations in the United States, making it a premier destination to view and photograph the Milky Way. Because of its dry air and vast pockets of undeveloped mountain territory, the state is home to numerous officially designated International Dark Sky places. The galactic core is visible from March to October, with the absolute peak viewing season occurring during late summer and early autumn when the galaxy's center rises highest in the sky.
