Cheyenne Mountain is a 9,565-foot peak in El Paso County, Colorado, located just south of Colorado Springs. It is best known globally as the site of a legendary Cold War-era military bunker, and locally as a hub for outdoor recreation and wildlife.

Because of its dry air and vast pockets of undeveloped mountain territory, the state is home to numerous officially designated International Dark Sky places. The galactic core is visible from March to October, with the absolute peak viewing season occurring during late summer and early autumn when the galaxy's center rises highest in the sky.
